Sunken Seating Area with Fire Pit in Rotherfield Greys

Project brief

Creating a Sunken Space for Entertaining in Style

At Element Landscapes, we recently delivered a bespoke sunken fire pit area, transforming an unused section of the garden into a standout entertaining space. The build started as a former trampoline area that had already been dug out, then evolved into a refined, finished feature shaped around the client’s requirements and concept plan.

Client’s Vision: A Luxury Entertaining Area Built Around People

The client wanted a sunken seating area that felt premium and social, a place to gather, host friends, and spend evenings outdoors. The centrepiece needed to be a circular fire pit that felt integrated into the landscaping, rather than added on. The final result comfortably seats around 15 people, and the client now calls it the “beer pit”, which tells you exactly how it’s used.

Design Development: From Concept to Finished Build

Working from the initial design direction, we collaborated closely with the client to refine the final aesthetic and overall feel of the space. Because the feature sits below ground level, it required careful planning around levels, finishes, and usability, ensuring it felt like a natural part of the garden and a comfortable place to spend time, rather than simply a sunken area.

Material Choice: Indian Sandstone for a Timeless Finish

To achieve the desired look, the project was finished in Indian sandstone, chosen for its natural texture and clean, high-end feel. The stonework elevates the space visually and gives the area a robust, durable surface suited to regular use, while still feeling considered and design-led.

Practical Engineering: Drainage, Services, and a Polished Finish

A sunken feature must perform as well as it looks, so drainage was a key part of the build. We addressed drainage challenges created by the below-ground design to keep the area comfortable and usable in changing weather.

We also installed the required services for the feature, including a dedicated gas supply line to support the gas fire pit. To complete the look and enhance evening use, we incorporated subtle lighting and clean rendered finishes, creating a space that feels finished, warm, and welcoming after dark.

Client Satisfaction: A Feature They Use, Not Just Admire

The client was delighted with the final outcome, both for the look and the practicality. It is now a true social hub in the garden, and another successful project for a repeat client we have completed multiple jobs for over time.

The results

Project summary…

This sunken fire pit project turned an old trampoline area into a premium outdoor entertaining space designed around real-life use. With Indian sandstone underfoot, integrated lighting, rendered finishes, and the services needed for a gas fire feature, the finished “beer pit” has become a go-to spot for hosting and relaxing, seating up to 15 people comfortably.
