Project brief
Precision Porcelain and Cladding across Three Tiers
At Element Landscapes, we delivered a complex porcelain and cladding project in Henley, built to a detailed designer specification. This was a highly technical garden build, shaped by challenging access, multiple levels, and intricate porcelain detailing throughout. Despite the constraints, we delivered the project to specification and budget, with a very happy client at completion.
Client’s Vision: A High-End, Detailed Finish Built to Spec
This project was driven by a concept drawing, including a clear specification and finish requirements. The goal was a clean, premium look using porcelain, with a crisp, modern feel created through careful detailing, accurate set-out, and high-quality cladding finishes.
Site Challenges: Three Tiers and No Machine Access
The garden was built across three tiers, meaning three separate levels had to be accurately set and constructed. Access was via a narrow route up the side of the house and a long staircase of roughly 30 steps, which created a major logistical challenge.
Because we could not get a digger or machinery into the garden, the entire project was completed using manual excavation and hand transport. Everything that came out and everything that went in had to be moved by hand.
Smart Solutions: Drainage, Safety Features, and Step Lighting
With no machine access, everything was completed by hand. We used a conveyor belt system to remove spoil efficiently and keep the project moving.
Given the multi-level layout, we installed the necessary drainage to manage water flow and keep the stepped areas safe in wet weather. For added client safety, we fitted a stainless steel wire balustrade handrail and installed lighting alongside the steps for improved visibility in the evenings.
To finish, we added a small lawn at the top of the garden, creating a practical space for the client’s dog.
Complex Detailing: Angles, Cuts, and Cladding Over Existing Walls
This was not a straightforward porcelain install. The build involved intricate detailing, with numerous angles and cuts and very little that was square or simple. Precision was essential throughout to maintain clean lines and a consistent finish across multiple levels.
We also worked around existing walls that required extra attention. Sections needed to be corrected and prepared before being finished, ensuring the final cladding looked sharp and intentional, rather than simply covering imperfections.
Winter Build: Tough Conditions, Strong Finish
The project ran through winter conditions, starting in November and completing at the end of January. With limited daylight, freezing temperatures, and difficult working conditions, it was a demanding programme, but we stayed on track and delivered the finished garden successfully.
The results
Project summary…
This Henley porcelain and cladding project was a demanding, designer-led build involving three levels, extremely difficult access, and high-precision porcelain detailing. With no machinery possible, the entire garden was excavated and built by hand, using a conveyor system to manage spoil removal efficiently. Despite the complexity and winter conditions, the project was completed to spec, within budget, and with an excellent client outcome.
If you are planning a porcelain patio, tiered garden build, or a detailed cladding finish and need a team that can deliver under challenging site constraints, we would love to help.
